New Australian Play Looks at Sidekicks

Can you divide the human race into heroes and sidekicks? That’s one of the questions posed by a new comic play by Sydney writer Stephen Vagg – “Sidekicks”, which starts at the Old 505 Theatre on November 3.

“Sidekicks” is a romantic comedy told from the point of view of two sidekicks, Mac (Dan Ilic) and CB (Emily Rose Brennan). As their “heroes” fall in love, Mac and CB bicker, backstab and insult each other as they debate whether they are genuine sidekicks or stars in their own right..

“It’s a Rosencrantz and Guilderstein-esque take on every Katherine Heigl rom com you ever saw,” says Vagg. “The play is a homage to the characters who do wisecracks alongside the star but never get too much screen time – the Judy Greers and Adam Goldbergs of the romantic comedy world.”

The play is a two-hander with Ilic and Rose Brennan performing multiple roles. “We needed actors who were sexy, funny and great at drama,” says director Louise Alston. “We are thrilled to have Dan and Emily.”

Ilic is best known for his TV appearances on “Can of Worms” and “Hungry Beast”, but also has extensive theatre experience. Brennan has been seen on TV in “Underbelly Razor” and “30 Seconds”, as well as in the recent Bell Shakespeare production of Taming of the Shrew. Director Alston’s previous credits include the feature films “Jucy” and “All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane. Writer Stephen Vagg’s previous plays include “Trivia” and “Friday Night Drinks”; he has also written for “Home and Away” and “Neighbours”.

So are Vagg and Alston’s favourite sideckicks? “I can’t go past Dr Watson – the sensible, down-to-earth and drug-free companion to Holmes,” says Vagg. “Although I do have a soft spot for Piggsy on the TV show “Monkey”. He was the only one on that trip who had his priorities right.”

“I like Heather Burns”, says Alston. “She always pops up in romantic comedies supporting people like Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality and she’s always fabulous. This play is in honour of people like that!”
